Our previous review of Logic3’s Sound Grip for PSP (PSPworld rating: A-) was largely positive, leaving us with high hopes for the company’s Sound System for PSP, and it was going to need high marks to compare well against Logitech’s PlayGear Amp (PSPworld Rating: A), it’s main competition. In fact, for $20 more than the Amp, it needed very high marks indeed.

On opening the Sound System, you notice the quality and attention to detail immediately. The folding design works differently from Logitech’s, with the front speakers staying put and the subwoofer folding back to reveal the PSP’s dock. We preferred the fixed PSP dock of the Sound System to the snap-on dock of the Amp. Another huge bonus, and something that we had really hoped would be a feature on the Amp, is the ability to keep the PSP charged when running off it’s own supplied AC adapter — only needing one cord to power both is a huge deal for us. Like the Amp, the Sound System also has a line-in on the back of it, allowing users to hook up other audio devices, such as iPods — another big plus.

As far as the sound was concerned, the Sound System definitely leads the pack of small, battery-powered speakers we’ve heard. The addition of the subwoofer made the bass that much louder, and overall tonal separation was better than on the Amp. The unit also features a “3D” button that sends sound to a processor that causes it to have a surround effect, and it works nicely, although it does limit the volume to levels that we considered just “loud.” Great if you are in a small room, but for a party you’ll want to leave it off and utilize more of the Sound System’s power — of which it has plenty. We’re not actually sure whether we heard the System’s full potential, as it got so loud it was hurting our ears and we decided to turn it down.
As far as the batteries go, they will far outlast the PSP and a normal iPod — we played them for 15 hrs. straight on normal volume before we decided to go ahead and turn it off.
Overall, the Logic3 Sound System for PSP is a really good product, worthy of it’s somewhat lofty $80 price tag. The only real disappointments were the distortion caused by the “3D” processing at loud volumes and the lack of a remote control — something that, if added, would make this a “must have” PSP accessory for any owner using the PSP to listen to music or watch UMDs. As it stands, it’s still really useable, and it does it’s job well.

Pros: Good looks and sound, built-in PSP dock charges PSP without extra adapter, line-in capability, excellent battery life, included carrying case can hold a few extras.
Cons: No remote, “3D” processing can cause distortion at loud volumes.
