Sony today released a firmware update for all US PSPs. The update, which contains firmware version 1.5.1, requires at least 14MB of free space on your Memory Stick. To access the update you need a Wi-Fi internet connection, then simply go to the Network Update option which is at the top of the Settings menu.
You can also download the update via computer, then transfer it onto the PSP's Memory Stick.
