Reuters UK is reporting that top phone game publisher executives say mobile phone video games will rival games on handhelds like the Sony PSP by late 2006. The cost and complexity of developing games makes consolidation inevitable, the chief executives of private publishers Sorrent and In-Fusio and top mobile executives of Electronic Arts and Walt Disney said in a panel discussion at the Reuters Technology Summit.

"We think if we track (performance increases) out we're looking at devices pushing PSP kind of quality in late 2006, early 2007," said John Batter, general manager of EA Mobile.

The panel also discussed the difficulties of porting games to mobile platforms and how much of the market's success depends on carrier cooperation.
