Sony last night quietly released a network update for the Japanese PSP. The download requires at least 14MB of free Memory Stick space. It can be installed directly, using the Firmware update option on the PSP, or by downloading the update file to your computer and then transferring it to your PSP. The update installs software version 1.50, which adds support for German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Portugese and Russian languages, support to retain the screen mode setting (for video data stored on Memory Stick), support to allow resume play after recovery from sleep mode (for video data stored on Memory Stick), and support to allow resume play of audio tracks after recovery from sleep mode. Unfortunately no web functionality was added, but this update is certainly a step in the right direction for our friends waiting "across the pond." (Thanks to reader Rich D. for the info.)
