There are many potential Sony PlayStation Vita owners who already own the original Sony PlayStation Portable. With that said, you can safely assume that there are going to be many of these gamers looking to bring their Sony PSP games with them, and play them on the PS Vita handheld.

The PS Vita is a change in hardware in terms of Sony handhelds, as it is doing away with the UMD disc format that was utilized by the first Sony handheld, the Sony PSP.

The new way in which the PS Vita is going to work is through the use of memory-card type cartridges, and a complex system allowing digital downloads.

Many Sony PSP owners have been wondering if they would be able to bring their Sony PSP games with them onto the PS Vita, even though the new handheld is technology not backwards compatible.

Sony has answered gamers by announcing the new app for the PS Vita, UMD Passport.

UMD Passport has only been confirmed for the Sony PS Vita in Japan thus far, and there are no rumors as to whether or not it would be making its way to the U.S. or U.K.

What UMD Passport is going to allow if for PS Vita users to download a digital version of their Sony PSP game for a discounted price.

The PS Vita will recognize the game when you register the fact that you purchased it through your PlayStation Network account.

Gamers may not be happy with the fact that they do not get the game in digital form for free, but at least Sony is trying to answer some of the noise made by potential buyers.

We will continue to follow-up to see if UMD Passport is planned to be Japan-only, or if it will expand abroad.
