Which Age Group Uses PSP the Most?

In fanboy squabbles, it is common to hear one side refer to the other group's console as a 'kiddy' device. This comment is usually meant in a derogatory way to insult the technological prowess of another manufacturer's console, suggesting that the only games that it can run on its pitiful hardware are those targeted at kids. During the early days of the showdown between the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS, it was often the latter which was accused of being for 'kids', while Sony's handheld was claimed to be for an older teenaged audience.

But is it true? After all, Nintendo went on to conquer the world not on the backs of 6-12 year olds, but also thanks to much older adults who bought the device for a myriad of 'Brain Training' applications.

Sony has helpfully done some research about who spends the most money on PSP hardware and related accessories. Unsurprisingly, it appears that the device really is popular with a core teenaged demographic, with the lion's share of customers landing between 13 and 17 years old. Almost half of all PSP owners are in their teen years, with an additional 20 per cent of owners under 13. What is surprising, however, is just how dominant this group is as a fan base. Popularity of the PSP quickly drops off with gamers older than 24 years old. We would have thought that its adult-oriented game offerings and multimedia features would appeal to older users in greater numbers.

Why do adult gamers make up such a small percentage of PSP owners? Are they preoccupied with other toys like the iPhone and Zune, or is handheld gaming still perceived broadly as an activity for kids. We welcome your thoughts, particularly if you are a PSP gamer over 20.
