Which Age Group Uses PSP the Most?

kid-gamer-icon.jpg

In fanboy squabbles, it is common to hear one side refer to the other group's console as a 'kiddy' device. This comment is usually meant in a derogatory way to insult the technological prowess of another manufacturer's console, suggesting that the only games that it can run on its pitiful hardware are those targeted at kids. During the early days of the showdown between the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS, it was often the latter which was accused of being for 'kids', while Sony's handheld was claimed to be for an older teenaged audience.

But is it true? After all, Nintendo went on to conquer the world not on the backs of 6-12 year olds, but also thanks to much older adults who bought the device for a myriad of 'Brain Training' applications.

Sony has helpfully done some research about who spends the most money on PSP hardware and related accessories. Unsurprisingly, it appears that the device really is popular with a core teenaged demographic, with the lion's share of customers landing between 13 and 17 years old. Almost half of all PSP owners are in their teen years, with an additional 20 per cent of owners under 13. What is surprising, however, is just how dominant this group is as a fan base. Popularity of the PSP quickly drops off with gamers older than 24 years old. We would have thought that its adult-oriented game offerings and multimedia features would appeal to older users in greater numbers.

Why do adult gamers make up such a small percentage of PSP owners? Are they preoccupied with other toys like the iPhone and Zune, or is handheld gaming still perceived broadly as an activity for kids. We welcome your thoughts, particularly if you are a PSP gamer over 20.

I enjoy my PSP because games look so much better as compared to DS /DSi. I love the BIG screen. I like how it has the ability to connect with the PS3, but I wish Sony would do more with that. I agree that iPhone and Zune have cut into the % of older gamers. I have an iPhone. I love it because of all it can do AND it makes phone calls. Maybe the PSP go will help increase interest again.

I have a launch PSP, and I'm 27 now. I personally love it because of everything it does. Wifi and online capabilities, mutimedia such as music, videos, and picture viewing, as well as extra perks if you know how to mess with it. It does what an iPod does, AND it has a good lineup of games, especially with what's coming this year and next year. It's my All-In-One device. I don't need an app for everything. That's what my computer is for.

I have 2 p.s.p. An original black 1000 series and a God of War edition. They are played everyday by a 34 yr. old.

Personally, I sometimes wonder where they get their numbers from. I'm 26, and my sister is 28. Oh, and my mom is 45 years old. We all play the ds/dsi and the psp on a regular basis. While they like a lot of the puzzle games, I'm teaching my mom to play monster hunter and my sis to play Sid Meyer's Pirates! My mom has an I phone, but she plays her handhelds more. She loves the games, and the movies she's been buying off the PSN, as do I.

I am 31 years old and i was obsessive on PSP (since 3 years ago )but as i grow more and more i am loosing my great interest in psp because of deficiency in adventure games which have long story and many brain charging tricks which attract any gamer older than 30 so i hope they just increase adventure games and everyone will buy it ... this is for sure

So, nearly 62 percent of PSPs are bought by under 17 year olds? Are they serious? It seems that kids today show a lot more self control regarding saving their pocket money than I ever did! ;)
