Vote On Your Favorite PSP 2 Concept

Many people believe that we are less than two short weeks away from hearing about Sony's plans for the PSP 2. The Japanese hardware maker is expected to reveal the news of a PSP successor at this year's E3 conference in Los Angeles. Will the device feature a touch screen? Some kind of physical media for games? Dual analog sticks? It's anybody's guess. For the past few years, fans, graphic designers and 3D artists have been doing some guessing of their own, producing the high-quality prototype images you see below. None of the designs are official, they are just ideas put forward about what the next PSP might look like. Have a gander and vote for your favorite PSP 2 prototype design in the comments below!

1) The Magic Roll-up PSP

Several display manufacturers, including Sony, have experimented with flexible displays. This led one designer to imagine a radical PSP concept that would roll up the screen when not in use. Other than the obvious fact that we are many years away from perfecting this technology, our major concern is with keeping the screen rigid during play.

2) The Sleek Slider

This design, which began making the rounds before Sony officially unveiled its PSP Go hardware revision, somehow manages to look more appealing than Sony's official model. We love the metal casing that gives the unit an expensive look, but we can definitely foresee a problem with the microscopically small controls.

3) A familiar, compact design

This convincing design manages to combine the compact form-factor of the PSP Go with the dual analog sticks many fans have been clamoring for. We like the classy metal case and face buttons, but something just doesn't look quite right in the proportions. Also, the sliding controls might be vulnerable to our twisting hands during particularly heated gameplay sessions.

4) The PSP Touch

Sony has patented designs for several types of touch screen, including one that offers tactile feedback to the user. We might see touch become standard on the next generation PSP hardware, especially since competitors Apple and Nintendo have based their own handheld devices on touch screen input.

5) The Elusive PSP Mobile Phone
psp-phone-2.jpg
This convincing mock-up first appeared in an Italian gadget magazine, and fueled rumors that Sony was working on a mobile phone concept with partner Ericsson. We may still see a PSP-enabled handheld from Sony, as the hardware maker seeks to branch out and extend the PSP platform over multiple devices.

6) The Diagonal Slider

This PSP phone concept takes the design in a different direction: diagonal. An innovative and stylish way to conceal the directional input controls on a compact mobile handset. We worry about our ability to control the action on a screen that is off-center, especially for long periods of time. The other problem with these phone designs is that they both forsake any useful analog stick for input, making certain genres difficult to control.
