Ushiro Announced for PSP

Japanese developer Level-5 has announced a new game called Ushiro for the PSP. Level 5 is best known for their work on the Jeanne d'Arc tactical RPG and the Professor Layton puzzle series on the Nintendo DS. PSP owners still have to wait a while to get their hands on the planned title, which has been given a release date sometime next year in Japan. So far, we have no information on a possible Western localizaiton, but given the history of Level 5 releases, it is almost a certainty.

A short article in the most recent issue of Famitsu magazine dropped a few tantalizing details about the Ushiro project. It is actually quite a unique game, and unlike anything we have seen so far on the PSP. In this horror-themed RPG, players take on the role of a shinigami spirit who can interfere with the lives of the living, by helping them to overcome struggles or fulfilling their desires. Shinigami are japanese ghost-like figures that can interact with living people. In this game, the player will be able to literally possess the bodies of the living, and in some cases, do battle with their inner thoughts. Pretty. Heavy. Stuff.

Anyway, after all of the doom and gloom on the US release front, it is great to see yet another Japanese developer show some support for a great handheld system.
