The Magic Price Point For Sony PS Vita Games

gf-kratos-t.jpg

The Sony PS Vita is set to launch this February in the U.S. and the U.K. and is competitively priced in terms of the handheld itself. What though is the magic price point that Sony should be hitting with the games?

When you look at the current handheld gaming market, you not only have to include the Nintendo 3DS, but you also have to include the Apple iPhone, iPad, as well as Android tablets and smartphones.

For this reason, it is easy to see that the Sony PS Vita is going to be facing some serious competition not only in the video game industry, but in the tablet and phone industry as well.

Many of the top tier Apple iPhone and iPad games retail for $9.99, but you typically do not see games being sold for any more than that.

This includes some of the bigger iPad releases including Infinity Blade, as well as many other deep experiences. The wildly deep Grand Theft Auto III also just recently released for iOS devices, and is currently on sale for $2.99.

So taking this into account, can Sony truly expect to charge $49.99 for every single Sony PS Vita game, even when many of them may not be much deeper than some of the top-tier iOS games.

With that said, Sony appears to be ready to aggressively price many of the PS Vita games, as we are starting to see a $29.99 price point on many of the big games, including ModNation Racers Road Trip, WipeOut 2048, and others.

A price point under $30 would put the Sony PS Vita games within reach of an impulse purchase, and would make them seem a lot more worthy than plopping down $50 every time you want to buy a new game.

Sony may find that this is the magic price point for the Sony PS Vita releases in order to combat the new competition in the handheld gaming market.
