Sony Releases Pair of New Firmware Updates

The PSP and PS3 devices each received a firmware update this week, although the new code adds little in the way of functionality. The new PS3 Update 3.1 adds recommendations for games and videos on the Playstation store. This feature (pictured below) will suggest other titles to PS3 owners depending on games that other users have purchased in the past. This system appears to be quite similar tot he one used by online retailer Amazon, which suggests purchases depending on what other customers have bought (often with hilarious results). Other than being used as a marketing tool, it is not clear what other functionality may be enabled by this update. That suggests to us that it may also involve some fixes to potentially block PS3 pirates.

Meanwhile the new PSP firmware 6.31 is now available for download. According to Sony, the update contains stability enhancements for specific games, but these may also include anti-piracy measures.
