Sony PS Vita Sales Show Some Life In Japan

The Sony PS Vita struggled out of the game in Japan in terms of hardware sales, but it appears if there is a sign of good things to come for Sony if recent sales figures hold steady.

Media Create has released sales figures for both the last week of 2011 as well as the first week of 2012, and things are looking up for the next-generation handheld.

The Sony PS Vita made big news as it launched to a big opening in its first two-days of release, only to plummet in sales the week following launch.

Media Create sales for the last week of 2011 showed that the Sony PS Vita sold through 42,648 units in that time period.

For the first week of 2012, it has now been confirmed that the Sony PS Vita sold another 42,915 units during that week.

This is good news for Sony as it shows that PS Vita sales are starting to even out, as the handheld has consistently sold 40,000 units each week for the past few weeks.

This is still far behind the Nintendo 3DS, which led hardware sales in Japan selling 197,952 units the last week of 2011, and 240,819 in the first week of 2012.

The next closest console was the Sony PS3 which sold 67,199 and 74,459 units respectively over those two-weeks.

This comes as Sony has been rumored to be strongly considering dropping the price of the next-generation handheld.

Selling 40,000 or so units a week may not seem like the ideal situation for Sony, but it is certainly a start as they can begin to build a strong base of handheld owners to grow the platform.

This may be a sign of an upswing for the Sony PS Vita as the U.S. and European launches near.
