Sony PS Vita Price Cut By Retailers In Japan To Lift Sales

Retailers in Japan have made a bold move to try and give a boost to sales of the Sony PS Vita, taking matters into their own hands by cutting the price of the Sony next-generation handheld.

The Sony PS Vita has received a lot of negative press over the past few weeks due to its sales after launch.

The console managed to sell only 72,000 units in Japan in the second week of release. This came after the handheld sold hundreds of thousands of units in its first few days of release.

The belief by many is that the early-adopters of the Sony PS Vita picked up the handheld on launch day or a day later, and after that sales simply dropped off as the mainstream consumers were not interested in the handheld, which some see as overpriced.

This has prompted many to call on Sony to drop the price of the handheld in Japan, as well as prior to the launch of the handheld in the U.S. and Europe.

Sony has backed off and has ignored the pressure thus far.

Nintendo, with the 3DS, had to follow a similar tactic, by dropping the price of the handheld shortly after launch to improve sales.

It has been confirmed by GamesRadar.com that many retailers in Japan are already cutting the price of the Sony PS Vita by as much as 20%.

These price cuts are reportedly for the 3G version, which has had very minimal sales overall thus far.

Unofficial price cuts are already taking place, and gamers seem to waiting to see what Sony does next.
