Sony Offers Extended Warranty for PSP

Sony's PSP is a fairly rugged piece of machinery. We've dropped ours from various heights, twisted it violently, thrown it into carry-on luggage and even spilled drinks on it. After all of the abuse, it continues to perform flawlessly, and because we slapped a screen protector on it, the screen is scratch-free. But there are some things that even the PSP cannot withstand. For those sorts of incidents, Sony is now offering an accidental damage plan, in addition to a 1- or 2- year extended warranty for PSP owners.

People who have bought a new PSP within the past year can get a one year extension on their warranty for $29.99 or a two-year extension for $39.99. The PSP with accidental damage waiver will be priced at $39.99 for a year's worth of coverage, or $49.99 for two years. If you want the accidental damage coverage, you need to buy the plan within 30 days of first getting your PSP. Both the PSP-3000 and PSPgo are covered.

"The PlayStation brand has long been synonymous with the highest quality in engineering and design, and it's because of the reliability of the PS3 and PSP systems that we can offer the PlayStation Protection Plan," said Glenn Nash, SCEA, in a statement. "We have heard from consumers that they're interested in an extended service plan that's backed directly by SCEA and leverages our technical expertise. While both the PS3 and PSP systems are designed with future-proof technology and built for long lifecycles, we're looking forward to offering this service to consumers looking for added peace of mind."

Many large retailers in America already offer extended warranties for video game consoles, and Sony's plan is priced in a similar range to compete with those in-store offers. When something goes wrong under the Sony plan, you will need to send your device to them for repair, using an included shipping box.

Customers can purchase the PlayStation Protection Plan this month by calling (866) 716-7669, Sony said. Additional terms and conditions are on the Sony website.
