Sony Launches Online Store For PSP

Back in August last year we mentioned Sony's free download service on YourPSP.com [click here]. Whilst this was not an actual pay-per-download service it allowed PSP owners to download game demos, videos, music and pictures without coughing up a thing. At the time, the launch of the download service on YourPSP.com seemingly conflicted with Sony's attempt to drive digital downloads via it's own iTunes style service, Sony Connect. Now however, Sony have confirmed that they have plans to launch a PSP store similar to their PS3 Playstation Store that will allow pay-per-download of games and other content.

Speaking at SCEA's Gamers Day 2007, SCEA president Jack Tretton said, "I think the advent of a long awaited and quite frankly long overdue ability to deliver a download-able service for the PSP will help us out a great deal. Hopefully we’ll have it out there by the fall."

The ability to buy and download content whilst on the move via Wi-Fi hotspots will be a great addition, but it would be great if Sony made sure that the existing library of old PS1 and PS2 titles currently available to US PS3 users was accessible to the rest of the world, particularly those of us in Europe. To this end, Sony also previewed more than 30 games for the PS3 this week, along with a full library of games and services for the PSP.

"We are seeing a huge influx of games coming to all our PlayStation platforms in the remainder of our fiscal year," said Tretton.

There is also speculation over rumoured plans by Sony to open up an iTunes-style online store to flog music as the PSP features a wide array of media playback options.
