Sony Blog Plays Down PSP 2 Rumours

We've told you of rumours of Sony planning a new PSP with added features including phone capability. These have come and gone but some industry analysts have attested to them with certainty and it seems they have become critical with Kotaku's recent assertions.

However, using their recently launched official Playstation blog Sony have played down any speculation of any imminent release of a second PSP.

"The rumor mill is flowing about new PSP hardware and a PSP phone, and I just wanted to take the time to clear the air. We haven't announced anything about a new PSP, much less one that would have any phone capabilities," said John Koller, the PSP's senior marketing manager."

"As SCEA's resident PSP guru, I'm thrilled to hear that there's so much interest in the platform, but sorry folks, these reports floating around fall into the rumours/speculation category."

PSP spotters had unearthed a Sony Ericsson patent that outlined a device that mixed mobile phone functions and videogame features. These included a slot loading UMD drive, improved battery life, an internal 4GB hard drive, Bluetooth capability, and better screen, with an improved d-pad that's closer to the PS3's in terms of design [via Eurgamer, GameDaily.biz]

According to the rumor, all of this is supposed to sell for the same MSRP as the current PSP when it goes on sale later this year.

Rather than announce anything at this point, no doubt Sony are choosing to tease us with the anticipation of a new model, since they have not flatly denied any plans.
