Sony Announces Powerful New Graphics Engine For PSP

At the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco today, Sony announced that it is will bring its popular PhyreEngine development tool over to the PSP. This software should make it easier for developers to make high-quality looking games on the handheld platform.

Originally introduced in 2008, PhyreEngine has since been adopted by a number of studios and used in PSN titles such as thatgamecompany's Flower and flOw, Sidhe Interactive's Shatter and GripShift, and many others. This free middleware allows developers to focus more on game mechanics rather than worry about implementing snazzy effects on the powerful Playstation 3.

PhryeEngine for the PSP and a graphics demo called "Tunnel Vision" will be on display this week at the SCE booth at GDC.

"We're very happy to see the continued popularity of PhyreEngine with the global game developer community. PhyreEngine for PSP was developed in response to requests from the game developer community, and we hope that the release of the PSP version demonstrates our commitment and support for game developers on all our platforms." SCEI senior VP of technology Teiji Yutaka said.

We look forward to seeing what creative developers can do with these new tools, and we are happy to see Sony continuing its strong support for third party software makers on the PSP.
