Skype Aggressively Targets Mobile Devices, PSP

Internet voice provider Skype is poised to move into the mobile space in a big way. The company recently announced that an iPhone app is 'coming soon', presumably after a deal was struck with hardware maker Apple. Skype, which allows customers to make inexpensive calls using Internet protocols, has been a controversial player in the mobile phone space. That is because the voice-over-IP provider allows callers to circumvent more costly long distance calling charges.

Skype and Verizon are also likely to announce a brand new partnership tomorrow at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The two companies are expected to announce that Skype will be rolled out on the Verizon network, for devices including the RIM Storm, Storm 2, Curve, Curve2, Tour and Tour2 and 8830 World Edition Blackberry.

Of course, PSP owners have already enjoyed the use of Skype on our portable gaming device for more than a year. The free service allows you to make phone calls anywhere in the world from your PSP as long as you are connected to a wireless hotspot. Even better, calls to other Skype users are free, and prices for regular calls are way lower than calling with a regular phone. The only thing you need to get started is a PSP with the latest Sony official firmware and a headset (to input your voice). So far in our experience the service works great and calls come through crisp and clear. Another nice thing is that all of your contacts from your PC account are automatically carried over to PSP when you sign in. Click here to download Skype for your PSP, if you don't already have it.

You can even download Skype for the Nokia N800, N810 and N900 mobile phones.

Skype can be used on any recent PSP and allows users to make free calls from any wireless hotspot.
