Should Sony Fear the Nintendo 3DS?

Our friends over at the Nintendo fan site Red Shell are quite excited for E3. But they are obviously much more excited to hear what Nintendo has planned for the coming year, even claiming that Nintendo's keynote could trounce Sony's in terms of excitement. We wouldn't agree, but they do raise an interesting point about the upcoming 3DS handheld:

"First of all, let's talk handheld gaming. Nothing, not even the PSP 2, has us more excited than Nintendo's new 3DS project. This new portable device will continue on from the uber-successful dual-screen line, but add 3D stereoscopic capabilities to the display. It features all-new hardware, too, making it a true powerhouse and successor to the original DS."

We don't yet know the details on the 3DS, so it is hard to tell whether it will be a capable competitor to Sony's PSP (or rumored PSP2). But we do have to admit that the prospect of 3D stereoscopic gaming sounds pretty incredible for a handheld, especially at a time when other manufacturers are just beginning to push 3D in the living room. According to Gizmodo, there are other reasons for Sony to worry as well: The 3DS could incorporate much more powerful hardware, a screen resolution of up to 720p and motion-sensing accelerometers into its design. This is shaping up to be something much more substantial than an abortive hardware revision.

Are we quaking in our boots? Not until we see what Sony has planned for portable gaming during its E3 presentation.

If the Nintendo 3DS looks anything like this mock-up, we want one.
