September Hardware and Software Sales Charts

Sony had a great September at retail according to the latest NPD sales numbers, just released today. During its first full month on sale in the United States, Sony's newly designed PS3 enabled the company to sell 491,800 units at retail. This figure includes both the new PS3 'Slim' and older models of the PS3. A significant price drop across the board brought the price of Sony's home console down to $299 USD, a price point that seemed to please many U.S. consumers last month. Sales of Sony's PSP handheld were up slightly higher compared with August, although these numbers do not reflect the impact of the PSP Go, which launched on October 1st. There is speculation that the PSP Go may not be selling at expected levels due to a high price point and lack of consumer interest.

Microsoft applied a similar price cut to its high-end Xbox 360 elite, and sales numbers were strong, with the company moving 352,600 units ahead of the Christmas shopping season.

The Nintendo DS continues to be the strongest-selling video game device in America, with more than half a million units sold in September. These numbers include the recently revised DSi hardware, which allows users to download bite-sized games to the device.

On the software side, Halo: ODST was the undisputed market leader, shifting 1.5 million copies. A strong showing by Batman: Arkham Asylum on the PS3 shows that the game still has significant legs on Sony's console.
