Scrabble announced for PSP and DS

Electronic Arts today announced that it will be bringing a portable version of its Hasbro licensed Scrabble game to the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS. The Vancouver-based publisher has plans to bring lots of classic board games to Xbox Live in the form of Hasbro Family Game Night. We might see classics like Battleship and Connect Four come to the PSP if the scrabble port is a success. (Has it really come to this, Sony? Has it?)

The PSP version of Scrabble will offer three modes of play including: Classic, which offers traditional play; Speed, where players race the clock; and the new fast paced Scrabble Slam card game where players try to be the first to discard all their Slam cards by making four letter words.

We aren’t sure that the words “Slam” and “Scrabble” belong in the same sentence, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

In addition to the gameplay modes listed above, Scrabble PSP will come equipped with a Word Finder (read, Cheat device) and Wi-Fi multiplayer capability. The game will make use of ad-hoc sharing to allow play with only one copy of the game.

Both the PSP and DS versions of Scrabble are expected to ship to North America in March 2009. Electronic Arts says that the games will be rated “E” for Everyone and carry an MSRP of $29.99.
