PSP Go Sells 1000 Units in Australia

Australians are known for many things: surfing in constant danger from sharks, wrestling crocodiles and drinking Fosters. They are NOT known for their love of Sony's PSP Go, apparently. According to sales numbers that are just now beginning to trickle in, the newly-designed handheld found very few fans down under. The device managed to sell only around 1000 units in its first week on sale, according to information provided by Sony employees.

In an interview with journalists, Sony spokesman Michael Ephraim said his company wasn't too surprised by the poor numbers:

"Clearly we haven't done massive numbers but it's not something that we're concerned about ... because there are still some issues that we need to work through. I suppose the applications are going to catch up with the device ... the connectability to the PS3 and those other applications will start making this device even more viable," Ephraim said.

So why has the PSP Go failed to capture the attention of fans in Australia? Well for one thing, the unfavorable exchange rate means that Sony's new device is an expensive piece of kit, at $450 Australian dollars. For only $50 more, consumers can pick up a brand new PS3 Slim. Also, it isn't yet clear that the PSP Go offers significantly more value or performance than the cheaper PSP 3000 hardware, which remains on sale in shops.
