PSP Firmware v6.30 Adds Feature From Homebrew Community

If you've got a lot of downloaded games on your PSP, sorting through them all can be rather annoying. Users of custom firmware on Sony's PSP have long had the ability to sort their games into sub-categories in the GAME folder using the gamescategories.prx file. Now, thanks to Sony's latest update, official users will also be able to group games together in the XMB. Hackers have derided the recent update as yet another example of Sony lifting ideas from the homebrew community, but if it improves functionality of the system, we're all for it.

The other juicy feature discovered in the new firmware update are two folders for NEO Geo and Turbo Grafx 16 games. We've known that Japanese PSPs would soon support these retro consoles for a while, but it is nice to see the feature coming to America. And of course, this is yet another area in which Sony is still playing catch-up to custom firmware hackers, who have been able to access 16-bit emulators for a long time.

Finally, the firmware update includes support for Playstation Plus, Sony's new paid subscription service that gives users access to free downloadable content every month.
