PSP Firmware Update 5.03 Now Available

The PSP is going to get an official firmware update in the next few hours. The Director of Playstation Network Operations Eric Lempel revealed on the official blog today that the update would be coming soon. Interestingly, it also includes a security fix:

“Hi, everyone, I wanted to give you a quick heads up that a new PSP firmware update, v. 5.03, will be released soon. This update includes a security patch for the PSP’s system software.”

Presumably, the security update that Lempel is referring to is a response to the GripShift savegame exploit that has allowed some hackers to run custom firmware on the PSP 3000. There may also be measures in this update to prevent the new Datel Blue Tool battery from functioning when it is released in the future.

Users that are interested in running homebrew software on their PSP are advised to steer clear of any official updates such as this one.

A buffer overflow exploit in GripShift allows hackers to run custom firmware and homebrew on the PSP 3000.
