PSP Firmware 5.50 Aimed at Digital Distribution

playstation-store_icon.jpg

System software update 5.50 for the PSP is now available and it allows unregistered users to check out content on the PlayStation Store and view the Information Board via the XMB on their PSP systems. Sony seems particularly keen to showcase its new online digital distribution channel, in light of recent news that the company may be abandoning the UMD format altogether. The upcoming game Patapon 2 will be abvailable as a digital download only, further emphasizing this shift in marketing strategy.

The all new 5.50 firmware upgrade means you no longer need a PlayStation Network account to do a quick bit of window shopping – you can check out all the latest games, trailers and demos available for download from your PSP. This change makes a lot of sense from a marketing point of view, considering that many users may have been put off by the need to register an account.

PSP users will now be able to view PlayStation Network’s Information Board directly on the PSP system’s XMB (XrossMediaBar) interface– the live news feed detailing the latest PlayStation Store offers – on their screen (as long as they are WiFi connected). This is probably a way for Sony to inform gamers of the latest offerings without having them log on to the net or visit their local game shop. Retailers, watch out!

Now everyone can access the PlayStation Store directly from the PSP.
