PSP 4000 Unlikely

There has been a lot of baseless rumor and speculation going around over the past week about the possibility of yet another revision to the core PSP hardware. While we feel that a PSP successor or PSP2 is definitely in the cards based on recent evidence, we find no evidence to suggest a PSP 4000 revision. In fact, there is very little reason for Sony to invest time and resources in improving the current generation PSP hardware any further than it already has.

The rumors began when Eurogamer cited “unnamed sources” as confirming a PSP 4000 would precede a PSP successor as early as this coming year. However, no sources were named, and no other information was provided to establish the credibility of this story. Furthermore, Eurogamer is the only publication reporting this rumor. Sony has officially said that no such revision is in the works, and that engineers in Japan are focusing on other projects.

A PSP 4000 would be a bad business decision in the current economic climate. Generally, hardware revisions dilute marketshare and confuse customers. Unless they are handled with the utmost care (such as the recent Nintendo DSi revision) new hardware releases can actually hurt sales. Consider this: how many potential PSP 3000 customers would hold off on purchasing the device if they were convinced that a PSP 4000 model might be just around the corner? As many analysts have already said, the things holding back Sony hardware at the moment are price and lack of games. The build quality of the hardware does not rank very highly on many gamers’ list of complaints. In fact, large numbers of PSP owners still prefer their trusty old PSP 2000 slim to the new brite version, due to interlacing issues with the screen.

It would be nice if Sony could perfect the current generation PSP, but perfection is absolutely not necessary for success of the hardware. What is needed are more games, and very quickly.

Is the psp 4000 coming in 2009?

We can't think of any major improvements that would necessitate a PSP 4000 model.
