PSP 3000 Gets Permanent Price Drop to $129

The price of Sony's PSP console has been reduced to $129, bringing it in line with Nintendo's DS handheld game system. Both manufacturers are competing to maintain their grip on the portable gaming market, while they prepare to launch the the next generation of handheld game systems this year. Nintendo's 3DS system goes on sale March 27th, priced at $249 USD. Meanwhile, Sony's NGP portable is expected later this year. The price drop is in effect starting today for all online and retail shops in North America.

This new lower price doesn't mean that Sony has given up on the current generation portable. Au contraire, says the company:

"[the NGP] can't replace a platform that has already been on sale for seven years now. In terms of pricing, we can't sell the NGP for the same price as a PSP. The PSP has become very affordable and popular, especially with younger generations. I think the NGP needs time to mature and get adopted by users. So, for the time being, both platforms will coexist," said Shuhei Yoshida, president of SCE Worldwide Studios.

You can grab the PSP 3000 core pack for $129 at Amazon. For your money, you get the device, itself, along with an AC power adapter and . However, with the low price of UMD games, many of which can be had for less than $10, this core pack is probably the best way to get into the current generation of PSP games. At the very least, it will make a great gift for those kids who've outgrown their Nintendo DS machines and are looking for something a bit more grown-up. Just be prepared when they come after you looking to get their hands on your shiny new NGP when it comes out in the fall.

The slimmer PSP 3000 model comes with a built-in microphone for Skype communication, along with a reduced glare 4.3" screen. One of the best features of the PSP 3000 is upgraded (AV) video output support. Users can now display their games and movies directly on a large screen TV using component or composite cables. This feature is particularly great for kids when the friends are around.
