PS3 Will Unlock Extra Content in Resistance Retribution

When the PSP was first announced back in 2003, one of the first things gamers wanted to know was whether the device would connect to the PS2 or PS3 in any meaningful way. While Sony did promise an unprecedented level of connectivity, this never quite panned out the way we hoped (does anyone remember the "rearview mirror" idea for Gran Turismo?). Now, Sony Bend have announced that they are taking a first, serious stab at inter-console connectivity with their upcoming shooter, Resistance Retribution. By connecting their PSP to a PS3 system running Resistance 2, players will be able to transfer some of the abilities from the console game over to the portable platform.

PSP owners who "infect" their PSP games this way will be given some of the abilities from protagonist Nathan Hale in Resistance 2. They will be able to stay underwater indefinitely and open certain doors that will grant access to all new areas of the portable game. Infected players will also have access to weapons like the Magnum and sticky grenades. The story in Retribution will change, as characters in the game make reference to the fact that players are infected with the Chimeran virus.

All in all, we think this is a pretty cool idea, and not overly gimmicky. Most PSP owners who are salivating for Retribution are probably also extremely interested in Resistance 2, so it isn't too much of a stretch to assume that players might own both titles.
