Portable 2nd G Will Tunnel Online Via PS3

Yes, Monster Hunter fans, you read that headline correctly. The latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly has confirmed that the next installment of Monster Hunter will feature online play. Capcom have teased us with online for years, as their fabulously successful RPG franchise has remained ad-hoc only on the PSP. In Japan, where people have enough friends who actually share the same gaming tastes, this hasn't been a problem. But in America, where the distance separating Monster Hunter fans sometimes extends as far as several city blocks, we have had to resort to janky solutions like Xlink Kai for our multiplayer fix. No more.

The North American version of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which is due this winter, will support online play through the PS3. Earlier, we reported this mysterious new PS3 tunneling capability, and you can read more about it here. Basically, games that make use of this feature can connect with other ad-hoc PSP systems by tunneling through the PS3 online connection. This can be done from anywhere that you can connect your PSP to a WiFi hotspot, using remote play. We are a bit worried that this method might produce some unwelcome lag, but hopefully Capcom has our best interests at heart and will make the most of this feature.
