NPD: Peace Walker Sells Only 52,000 Copies in June

Nobody could fault Sony for believing that Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker would be a major seller on the PSP. But sales statistics from the NPD group show that the game sold only 52,000 copies on UMD in North America during its first month on sale. Even if we generously assume that the game sold just as many copies in download form from the Playstation Store (which the NPD does not track), it does not make for a very impressive launch given the popularity of the franchise. These figures are nothing short of disastrous, and publisher Konami is likely reconsidering the wisdom of publishing the game exclusively on PSP. The upside is that we might actually see a PS3 port of Peace Walker in the near future.

There were more negative signs for Sony's PSP hardware in the June NPD report. In a month when excitement about the PSP should have been , the Nintendo DS outsold Sony's handheld at a rate of 4 to 1. Sales of the PSP were down 26% compared with a year ago.

Hardware sales figures June 2010:

PlayStation 3 304.8K
PSP 121.0K
Xbox 360 451.7K

Despite critical acclaim, Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker failed to chart in the top ten for June 2010.
