More Undead Knights Details

In a recent interview with Gamasutra, developer Kohei Shibata shared some of his thoughts about Tecmo's new PSP action title Undead Knights. The game features a novel twist on the combat genre, by giving the player the ability to summon and then control a horde of zombie allies in battle. Rather than play the good guys, Undead Knights will have players summoning legions of the undead to do what they do best -- presumably eat your opponents' brains.

In the short interview, Shibata had some flattering things to say about the PSP platform. It seems that he and the rest of the team at Tachyon felt the PSP was the best platform to target with a third-person action game.

"Well, obviously, I didn't come up with this idea just because I love the PSP and I wanted to make an action game. Action games are available on all platforms [...] going to the portable experience, with the PSP versus the DS, it just seems like the DS lends more toward the casual gamers, and I'm not sure if the real gamers are there wanting an action gameplay experience. So, from that, we looked at the market, we thought that the PSP was the way to go for this project, so that's one of the main reasons why we came to this project."

Now, we might be slightly biased here, but we agree that the PSP represents a great opportunity for developers with action/arcade titles. There is currently a shortage of games like that on the system, and with development costs rising on some of the newer consoles, the PSP is a great place to try out some more basic action game mechanics.

We look forward to seeing what Shibata and Tecmo are able to do with this game, which is slated to ship sometime later in 2009.
