Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, the epic new entry in the popular series, finally launched today in Japan. It was a well-timed release, as today marks the first day in a week-long holiday period, giving Japanese gamers plenty of time to enjoy their favorite pursuit. Line ups stretched outside many shops in Tokyo's Akihabara district, proving that the game enjoys lots of support from fans even if it is on a handheld console. The Yamada Denki Labi 1 shop opened its doors early today in a special launch event. It's nice to see such excitement for the launch of a new PSP game, even if its to be expected in Japan where Sony's system has enjoyed strong popularity.

Adding to the hype was news that Hideo Kojima himself would be on hand to meet with gamers and answer questions about the game. He was at the Yodobashi Camera in Yokohama during the afternoon to sign posters for the game.

An evening party in Toyko will cap off the day in style.

North American gamers can look forward to MGS: Peace Walker on June 8. European gamers can expect the game to reach their shores come June 17th.
