Jack Tretton Comments on E3 Press Leaks

Sony president and CEO Jack Tretton has told CNBC that he is disappointed with the way that industry leaks dissipated surprise about the PSP Go before the company got a chance to officially unveil the device at E3. Tretton seemed oblivious to the fact that it was sony's own Qore promotional video that leaked details of the device to the public by accident, instead focusing on earlier rumors circulated by industry insiders:

"People don't respect confidentiality in this industry. It's tough enough to keep a secret within your own company, much less when you speak to third parties," he told journalists. "This is an industry that has trouble focusing on today, we want to constantly talk about tomorrow.... You have to prepare for people to know things in advance. The frustrating thing is they only know a part of the story and that opens up a lot of conjecture and misinformation that ultimately waters down the reality when you roll it out."

And indeed, there were a number false rumors surrounding the new PSP that may have muted fan reactions to the device. Many press outlets speculated that the device would come equipped with a touch screen or a second analog stick, two items that were conspicuously absent from the final product specifications.

A PS3 slim model was similarly leaked to the press before E3, but was not officially announced by the company at the conference. Comparisons of box art used for the PSP Go and the alleged slim PS3 confirm that it is probably real. Another rumor, that Sony was planning to announce deep price cuts to its expensive home console, also failed to materialize at the Los Angeles convention. Tretton said that the company had no intention of dropping the price soon:

"I can't remember a day that people who have no stake in the profitability of our company have not called for a price cut. I think everybody but us would love to see it given away for free."

The PSP Go features a sliding screen and a smaller form factor than its predecessor.

I think that it's wrong to leak info. I think that a company looks towards there big press conference. I love being on pins and needles about what's coming up and new. I myself am a GEEK and HATE the fact that people can't keep a secret.

But he's not the president of Playstation right? Just the president of Sony?
