How Much Would It Cost To Import PS Vita From Japan

The Sony PS Vita is going to be made available in Japan before it reaches anywhere else in the world. The December 2011 launch of the PS Vita in Japan has been highly-anticipated, and has many gamers wondering how much it would cost to import the new handheld.

Following-up on our story from Thursday, asking the question of whether or not it is worth it to import a PS Vita, we decided to focus on the cost of importing a handheld in today's article.

The Sony PS Vita is going to carry the price tag of $249.99 in the U.S. when it launches on February 22, 2012 for the Wi-Fi model, and $299.99 for the 3G model. How does this compare though to the price point you would get if you decided to import from Japan today?

We have scoured the various import sites and have come to some middle-ground in regards to the cost of the PS Vita from an import standpoint.

The PS Vita handheld itself for the Wi-Fi model appears to be selling for the pricepoint of roughly $500 on the various import sites, doubling the price of what it will cost in the U.S. in February 2012.

Next up would be the need to import a PS Vita compatible memory card. Assuming that you would want to get something a little more than the bottom of the barrel, you can expect to pay around $50 for an 8GB memory card for the PS Vita.

So with the handheld and a memory card, we are now at a price point of $550 before you factor in shipping and taxes.

There is no point importing the PS Vita if you do not plan in purchasing a few games with it.

Uncharted Golden Abyss appears to be a must-buy, and that is carrying the import price-point of $75 at most import sites.

Other titles, such as Ridge Racer and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 are selling for between $55 and $65 depending on where you go.

We would assume the average would be 2 games for the consumer who was willing to import, so we will say the 2 games will cost $120 in total.

This brings our import price point up to $670. Factoring in shipping and taxes, and you are looking at $700 to import a Sony PS Vita with a memory card and 2 games.

On launch day in the U.S., this would cost you around $400.

So what are your thoughts gamers, is this worth the price to get it 8-weeks early?
