Don't Believe the Hype: PSP 2 Unlikely at E3

When Sony takes the stage to deliver its keynote at E3 this year, it is unlikely to reveal a brand new successor to the PSP. UK video game website MCV posted up a juicy rumor suggesting that the PSP 2 could be coming our way sooner than anyone thought. However, this rumor remains completely unsubstantiated and is based on only hearsay evidence from only one unnamed game publisher.

According to the anonymous source, the publisher is readying massive marketing campaign for new game releases and "it is waiting on a specific announcement from the platform holder before it can reveal [anything] of its future PSP plans". While there is undoubtedly a lot of exciting news coming our way soon about Sony's handheld gaming plans, a PSP 2 seems a little bit premature.

We predict that instead of a PSP 2 announcement, Sony will unveil a new virtual PSP platform which provides interoperability between mobile devices. The long-rumored PSP phone is much more likely at this point, given the success of Apple's competing iPhone. So, to summarize: yes there will be some interesting PSP news at E3, but no it will not be the PSP 2.
