DiRT 2 Headed to PSP, DS

Last week, UK-based developers Codemasters announced that they are working on a sequel of their much-loved rally racing game DiRT (to find out how much we loved the original game, read here). The first game was a graphical tour de force (which had awesome gameplay, to boot) when it appeared on the Xbox 360 and PS3. This time, however, Codemasters wants everyone to get a taste of the game. The company announced that not only would the title be shipping for current-gen consoles, but also for handhelds.

A Nintendo DS and PSP version of the game are due simultaneously with the release of the console title, sometime later in 2009.

One of the highlights of the original game was its stunning set of locations. According to Codemasters, DiRT 2 will be no different, sporting some truly exotic locales:

“Rally has attracted new stars and a new style that makes it more vibrant and exciting than ever before; it’s right up there as a premium extreme sport, attracting fresh crowds and a new confident attitude. DiRT 2 mirrors this new, exciting direction and, in a way, we’ll be throwing off some of the shackles and constraints that real-world rallying has to abide by. We’re pitching players against the most spectacular and dangerous environments in the real world.”

We know that the PSP is more than capable of hosting fantastic driving experiences. Just look at how well the Burnout games stacked up against their console counterparts. Looking forward into 2009, there isn’t much else in the way of racing coming to the PSP, so this could be a title to keep an eye on.
