Did Sony Price The PS Vita Too High, Or Just Right

Sony is set to launch their second handheld with the PS Vita in Japan this December, as well as in the U.S. and Europe in February 2012. One major question surrounding the launch though is whether or not Sony price the handheld too high, or just right.

The Sony PS Vita is going to launch with a price tag of $249.99, which could be perceived in a few different ways.

The initial perception is that $249.99 is quite expensive for a handheld console. The $249.99 price tag puts the price of the Sony PS Vita above every other gaming console on the market right now.

A Sony PS3 can be purchased now for $249.99, and even less if you find the right deal at certain locations. The $249.99 Sony PS3 consoles are shipping as bundles, so you get a free game or movie as well.

The Xbox 360 is also now under that $249.99 price tag, as is the Nintendo Wii, and the Nintendo 3DS.

Even beyond the initial gaming market, you also have to consider the Apple iPhone, and iPod Touch, which are about as close to handheld gaming consoles as you are going to get.

These can also be purchased for below that $249.99 price tag, along with the Android phones in the market.

The other side of the spectrum though is that you have to take into account that Sony is not going for the casual gamers with the PS Vita, they are going for hardcore gamers.

Sony wants to attract gamers who want more than a 5-minute session of Angry Birds on their iPhone. They want gamers who want to play adventure titles such as Uncharted on-the-go.

Taking that into account, the $249.99 price tag may actually be just right. Sony has not priced themselves out of the market, as they are going to attract gamers who want the latest and greatest in handheld gaming technology, which is what they are going to get.

The PS Vita packs some impressive hardware, and a game release schedule that will surely please just about any gamer.

Many people stated Sony priced the PS3 too high when it first released as well, but as we have learned, the strategy will likely work in the long-run, as the launch price is set to give the console an identity, and will expand in the years ahead.

What do you think, did Sony price the PS Vita too high, or right on the money?
