Adhoc Party (Tunneling) Details

The PSP tunneling application, now called AdHoc Party, is currently undergoing public beta testing in Japan. This application allows players to connect with others from around the world using the adhoc wireless connection on their PSP and an internet-connected PS3. The software, which can be downloaded to the Playstation 3 from the Japanese PSN, features a robust lobby and matchmaking service. We have some early details about the adhoc party system, which is available outside of Japan for intrepid PS3 owners who also have Japanese PSN accounts.

At the moment, only one game is officially supported by this system, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G. That makes it easy to find other games, since there is only one title being played over the service at the moment. In order to connect online, players must ensure that their PS3 is conntected to the Internet via Ethernet cable. They must also have a wifi-enabled PS3 (ice burn for unlucky 20 GB owners). After starting the adhoc party application on the PS3, players then must enter the adhoc lobby of whatever PSP game they wish to tunnel. Once that is set up, players can return to the PS3 and go hunting for an open lobby. The game connects automatically to other players in the lobby once an appropriate one is selected. The system currently supports voice chat with other lobby members over headset, which is a nice bonus.

So far, this software appears to be stable and fully functional. Hopefully Sony will continue to improve the offering, perhaps by adding support for roaming wifi access (currently the PSP must be in the same room as the PS3). Because it supports only a limited number of players, it isn’t quite as good as the online multiplayer found in games like Medal of Honor. But the adhoc party application will probably satisfy Western gamers who have been clamoring for a more seamless online experience in Monster Hunter. Oh, and the next game that will be added to the tunneling service is Phantasy Star Portable, so gamers have a lot to look forward to when this system officially launches State-side in January.
