This spring, Namco Bandai is opening a new front in the popular military aircraft series, Ace Combat. A follow-up to the successful Ace Combat X is in the works, and it has been given the name Joint Assault. This exclusive new PSP game makes some significant changes to the franchise, such as the inclusion of real-world theaters of war. The storyline might be pulled from the pages of science-fiction thriller, but the aircraft and the battlefields where they will fight are very real. Namco Bandai says that we can expect the game to arrive at retail this summer.

Set in the skies over familiar real-world locations including Tokyo, London, and San Francisco, players will step into the shoes of allied pilots and set out on numerous original missions to obliterate the enemy in fierce tactical dogfights. The new 'Enhanced Combat View' makes the intense combat more dynamic and believable to the player, making full use of the vast aerial environments to produce an incredible high-speed sensation and let players feel the intensity of traveling at supersonic speeds. All-new strategic AI evolves the mission flow according to the player's choices throughout the campaign for an even richer depth of gameplay experience.

Alongside the new gameplay features, the team has focused on producing the best visuals ever seen for a flight game on PSP while also significantly ramping up the online functionality. Multiplayer gameplay lets ace pilots get even with their foes in the eight player online versus mode, or cooperate with up to four friends in the co-op campaign mode.

Judging by the first screenshots below, we'd say that Ace Combat: Joint Assault is shaping up incredibly well. The environments appear very detailed, and the new blur effect in the second screenshot looks great.
