As fighting games go, you could certainly do worse than Street Fighter Alpha 3. The game is now recreated for the PlayStation Portable in Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max, enhanced from the original with additional content designed for the PSP including Wi-Fi functionality and extra gameplay modes. Adding to a roster of more than 30 characters from the Street Fighter universe, four additional fighters are made available. One gameplay mode new to the Street Fighter Alpha series, Variable Battle Mode, has been implemented to allow real-time tag team brawls. Yun, Maki and Eagle, from Capcom vs. SNK 2, as well as Ingrid from Capcom Fighting Evolution, are available and feature all new storylines.

PSPworld Take: A great remake of a game that fits perfectly into place in the PSP’s software lineup. Although the PSP’s buttons aren’t exactly the ideal platform on which to base a fighting game, the fun that is Street Fighter still comes through, as do the excellent production values, graphics, and sound. A quality addition to the PSP library.

Review Round-Up

GameSpot: 8.2
“A few years ago, the thought of having a perfect translation of Street Fighter Alpha 3 on a portable game system, complete with wireless multiplayer, would have been practically unthinkable, like some kind of fighting-game promised land. But here it is in all its glory, and the only reason it isn’t even more impressive is that the underlying game itself is pretty well worn.”

GameSpy: 7.0
“Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max is one of the best-made games you can get on your PSP, far better than a simple port of an arcade game, yet hindered quite significantly by the handheld’s design flaws.”

GamePro: 8.0
“Besides for the controls, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max has a lot going for it. Strong graphics mixed with an amazing selection of fighters, along with tons of modes and a wifi connection for wireless fighting make this, for sheer lack of competition, the best fighting game on the PSP.”

PSX Extreme: 8.8
“Regardless of whether or not you can get your hands on Capcom’s sticky d-pad attachment, you owe it to yourself to get Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX if you enjoyed any of the previous versions, are a fan of 2-D fighting games, or happen to be the least bit curious as to what the genre is all about.”

Aggregate Rating: 8.1
