Following the recent announcement that the Parasite Eve spinoff Third Birthday is coming to the PSP, there has been much speculation about exactly what kind of game it will be. The series began life as an RPG, before delving into survival-horror territory for the sequel. Now, Square Enix developer Hajime Tabata has revealed to Famitsu magazine that the upcoming PSP game will actually be a third-person shooter. Fans of the series were left immediately scratching their heads in wonderment and anxiety: After all, Square's last adventure into shooterdom produced the lackluster Dirge of Cerberus on the PS2.
But perhaps fans need not worry. Another successful survival-horror franchise, Resident Evil, successfully made the transition to shooter with Resident Evil 4, so there is no reason why Square won't be able to pull it off here. Furthermore, the lack of a second analogue stick means that the designers have made one good choice, by sticking to a system that works for games like Logan's Shadow and Resistance: Retribution.
