Manic Monkey Mayhem PSP Review

PSP Minis review by Coty Biggs. Manic Monkey Mayhem is a wittingly entertaining title that mischievously evokes some of that ape-like 98% of your DNA. From the get go its clear this game is not to be taken seriously, without putting on airs as some grandiose white collar title. No, Manic Monkey Mayhem is simple, goofy, here to stir up chuckles and remind everyone that games don't have to be complicated to be fun.

After the initial curious intrigue subsides, it's time to get situated first with profile creation. Here the player is free to choose from one of eight chimps that will carry out your nutty will. Chimps range from small to large, to crazy and just plain bare bones banana slingin' primates, each complete with their own Manic back-story.

Readying the bushel of bananas on your shoulder, four gameplay modes give you an opportunity to lighten the fruity load with tons of banana chucking. First you have your typical Campaign, followed by Greatest Ape, Minute Monkey, and Ape Team that will all take place over eight environments. Don't get too excited yet however, there are tutorials awaiting. One rather annoying hiccup that hinders a cannonball like plunge into the Manic Monkey world are the tutorials. Before you can get started there are 10 separate levels to complete before being allowed to begin a proper campaign. These mandatory sessions range from simple banana throwing to more complicated banana dodging and catching activities.

Unfortunately not having integrated control scheme familiarization directly in game, the player may have a tendency to forget when to use a particular function even after copious amounts of tutelage. Although this becomes a smaller gripe when considering the intended audience (all ages) with younger individuals finding the game's artwork most appealing initially. So now all you parents out there don't have to listen to that raspy whine in the back seat when your kid cant figure out how to not get knocked off his sturdy earthen pedestal.

The other game modes are not multi-player as the names may suggest, which has implications for the eventual dwindling of continued playability. But hey! It's a mini! You cant have everything! Even though no multiplayer exists within these modes, the player still has the opportunity to race against the clock in an all out free for all, play a banana filled version of team dodgeball, and finally test those stamina skills when outlasting equally deviant computerized opponents. The benefit of additional game modes, besides the fact that they're...well...additional, is some added diversity that provides timely convenience to the player. Without committing to a mission, you're able to quickly begin a quick deathmatch against other furry foes while waiting in line.

No matter how serious, uptight, or disgruntled you may be, Manic Monkey Mayhem is sure to shake loose your inner Scrooge while making a tiny opposed thumb footprint on your PSP's hard-drive, with an even smaller one on your pocketbook.

Final Score: Manic Monkey Mayhem gets a 3.5 out of 5
