Open-Tee-Box-100Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee represents the fifth installment in the Hot Shots franchise and the first for a portable system. The series has always been known for it’s fun, vibrant gameplay and easy to learn controls. Because of this, it often gets written off as a game for kids, when in fact anyone who enjoys golf games will enjoy it. Open Tee follows in the franchise’s tradition, and adds to it a bit.

Gameplay is how it should be in a game like this — that is, fairly deep, with lots of unlockables and multiplayer, but relatively easy to understand. Trust us, you won’t need to master a sphere grid or anything like that to develop your golfers. The controls on the game are solid, yet extremely easy to learn, making Open Tee a very easy game to just pick up and play. Graphically the game really impresses with vibrant colors and nice textures. The audio on the game is also good. Ambient noises are often drowned out by your Caddie, and as with previous Hot Shots games, they can get annoying from time to time.

Overall, Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee is a quality golf title for those that don’t want or need the more complex gameplay and controls of Tiger Woods PGA Tour.

Pros: Vibrant, colorful graphics, easy-to-learn controls, lots of unlockables, wireless multiplayer (ad hoc).

Cons: The somewhat child-geared presentation, gameplay, and controls may be a turn off for some, no PGA Tour license.

Review Round-Up:

GameSpy: 5 (of 5)
“Listen up all you Tiger Woods fans and PC golf snob wannabe’s: the goofy character designs and flat-out silly caddy antics of Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee imply a bit of “kiddishness,” but the game is plenty grown up in terms of features, playability, and fun. Get this title now and enjoy outstanding golf n’ go action on the PSP. ”

IGN: 8.8 (of 10)
“The line between cute and cheesy is a fine one, but the game sweetly balances this divide with a fine-tuned game engine the delivers a genuine golfing experience. As a result, this is one of the most addictive PSP games to date.”

GameSpot: 7.8 (of 10)
“Open Tee capably translates the Hot Shots look and feel to the PSP, making it an accessible and entertaining golf game on its own. As a result, it’s a fine alternative for those who simply don’t like their golf Tiger style.”

Stuff: 9 (of 10)
“Open Tee teaches PSP owners what Hot Shots vets have known for years: that this is simply the best friggin’ golf sim on mother earth.”

Aggregate Rating: 8.9 (of 10)
