Duke Nukem: Critical Mass PSP Screenshots

Duke Nukem jokes are kind of like the Internet equivalent of fat mama insults: “If your OnLive console gets delayed much longer it will ship with Duke Nukem Forever,” and so on. That is why we were particularly astonished today when the very first batch of screenshots for the PSP version of Duke Nukem landed in our laps and we collectively popped a monocle before we could fully take them in. But make no mistake, they are gorgeous, and we have renewed faith that this PSP title will be one of the surprise hits of 2009.

The first game in the planned trilogy from Apogee and Deep Silver is called Duke Nukem: Critical Mass, and it is due to land in the US in September 2009. Two more episodes are also planned for the handheld, Chain Reaction and Proving Ground.

Duke Nukem: Critical Mass is a full-on 3D shooter, much in the same spirit as the much loved 3D game on the PC, so old now that it actually ran on a 2.5D engine similar to the one used in Doom. So far the camera angle for the new games hasn’t been pinned down, but Apogee has suggested that players will be able to switch between first- and third-person during play, and even a planned isometric viewpoint, all while exploring the same detailed 3D environment.

Anyway, on with the screenshots, before Duke Nukem Forever comes out!

A very common misconception, but The "original" 3D Duke Nukem game was in fact not using the Doom engine at all. It used something called the BUILD engine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Build_engine

Actually, the article is correct, noting the the BUILD engine was similar (not the same as) the old Doom engine. This was also noted in the referenced wiki article.

Of course, the first "Original" Duke Nukem game wasn't even an FPS it was a side scroller.
