Dissidia: New Gameplay Video and Info

Information about the upcoming Final Fantasy brawler has been hard to come by, as Square Enix remains characteristically tight-lipped about development of the game. Recently, however, the publisher has begun to reveal more tantalizing tidbits about how gameplay will unfold when the final version of the game arrives in Japan on December 18.

Dissidia will pit long-time favorite characters from different titles against each other in head-to-head combat. At least one hero and one villain from every major Final Fantasy game will be included in the final version, making for a lot of character options. By some counts, there will be more than 60 playable fighters in the final game (some of these will probably be different forms of the same character). But Dissidia is not a pure brawler in the tradition of games like Tekken or Soul Calibur. The game makes use of a tactical battle map, and players are still expected to manage RPG-like stats between fights.

Fights in Dissidia actually play out like Smash Brothers Brawl, but with hit points. Players have full control over their characters, and can run around each stage, grabbing powerups, flying through the air and delivering devastating combos.

Each fight is only one part of a larger battle, which plays out on an overworld map. You'll move your character around a grid picking up equipment and potions on the map. If you end your turn next to an enemy, or directly attack an enemy, a fight will begin. You have a certain amount of "Destiny Points" which determine how far you can move and what you can do on the board. You earn more DP by defeating non-boss enemies, and the more DP you have at the end of a stage, the more bonus stuff you'll get. There is more than one way to get to the boss at the end of every battle, so tacticians will have a bit of strategizing to do here.
