Sony NGP Specifications and Photos

The NGP is Sony's 'next generation portable' and direct successor to the PSP handheld. It will be released during holiday 2011, but we don;t yet have any idea about pricing. the device adds a ton of new features and with beefier internals it is expected t deliver graphics performance somewhere in line with current-generation PS3 games. While Sony has clearly tried to establish a 'clean break' with existing hardware by giving this device an entirely new name, it clearly has a lot of PSP pedigree in its design.

The familiar shoulder and face buttons are there, along with the widescreen landscape orientation. However this time Sony will give us dual analog sticks (cue cheering from gamers everywhere). There will be more innovative ways to control the gaming experience as well: the NGP includes a multi-touch screen as well as a touch-sensitive area on the rear of the device, which we imagine will be great for mouse-like control of real-time strategy games. Finally, it contains Sixaxis motion controls and GPS, to enable other kinds of gaming experiences which might include augmented reality and social gaming. Navigation of the NGP Interface will be done using touch screen, and it appears that Sony has done away with the XMB that we already know and love. Photos of the device below show that it is much larger than most other handheld on the planet. Size comparisons put it somewhere just below the profile of a Samsung Galaxy Tab.
