PSP Go Still Selling Poorly in Japan: Charts

Nintendo's jumbo-sized DSi XL (known as the LL in Japan) continues to have great success several weeks after its initial launch. According to retail sales tracking done by Media Create, the DSi Xl was the top selling console in the entire country last week, topping even the Playstation 3 at retail. We here at PSP World were initially skeptical that this new DSi aimed at adults would set the world on fire, but clearly we were wrong (in Japan at least). It will be very interesting to see how the device performs in North America when it is introduced here in early 2010.

Meanwhile, the PSP Go is experiencing sluggish sales, even though its predecessor has proven extremely popular in Japan. Why aren't Japanese gamers enthusiastic about Sony's slick new hardware? Maybe they prefer to own physical UMD copies of games.

Media Create Japanese Hardware Charts for Week Ended December 5th:

01 DSi LL - 67,243
02 Nintendo Wii - 46,673
03 PlayStation 3 - 46,558
04 PlayStation Portable - 38,839
05 DSi - 37,021
06 DS Lite - 7268
07 PSPgo - 3809
08 Xbox 360 - 3685
09 PlayStation 2 - 2057

Japan Software Sales Charts:

It's not selling because...... 1. It's not been hacked yet. 2. It's overpriced. 3. Retail are hardly going to push a product that they won't make a profit on. Physical media is more important than hardware to those guys. 4. This handheld generation is almost over. Consumers know a new platform will arrive by Xmas 2010. Why waste the cash. 5. As successful as the psp platform has been in japan (Sonys best market for the handheld), the ds is lightyears ahead in installed userbase, weekly hardware and software sales. Instead of asking why Japanese consumers aren't buying the psp go, we should ask why their isn't a single psp game in the top ten despite 30,000+ sales. One word...... Piracy.
