PSP Go Needs a Launch Party

Party_Hat.jpg

When Sony's new miniature, sliding PSP goes on sale October 1st, it will be released into the world without much fanfare. It is unlikely that big box retailers like Walmart will host midnight launch parties with lines snaking around the block. A few retail shops have even refused to carry the device, complaining that they won't be able to recoup much profit on game sales.

Compare the tepid level of excitement for the PSP Go with the hype surrounding the launch of the original PSP Phat. Back in 2005, Kaz Hirai even rung up the first purchase himself at a massive bash held in New York city. The PSP Go will not be getting such a splendid reception.

What is the reason for this 'failure to launch'? Well for one thing, most fans have pre-ordered the device from Amazon, so they don't have to actually get in their cars and drive to the shop. Secondly, since the PSP Go is kind of a hardware revision, it could be argued that it is not as exciting as an all new hardware launch. Still, excitement around some of the unboxing videos we've seen suggests that some people really are giddy with excitement over its impending arrival.

We think that what the PSP Go needs is a big old fashioned launch party, with cupcakes and music and everything. And if retailers aren't willing to play along, then Sony should throw it themselves. We are pumped for the release of the PSP Go, and it would be nice to celebrate its arrival in style.

We'd like to hear from readers: what is te excitement level like for the PSP Go in your neck of the woods? Have you noticed many retail displays or advertisements? Will you be lining up at midnight anywhere?

Well, I give a goddamn f*** about the PSP Go. The 3004 will drop to somewhat 125€ in Europe soon after Launch (Japan will be first.) And the Go will cost 250€ ??? That would be 350$! And I ask, for WHAT? A slider with lesser features... Thx Sony.
