PSP 3000 Screen Has Interlacing Problems?

3000-screen-interlace.jpg

Image ghosting may be a thing of the past, thanks to the improved refresh rate of the PSP 3000 screen. But a new problem has cropped up with the display, as some users are reporting seeing interlacing artifacts when fast-moving action takes place on the screen. Interlacing artifacts are sparations between the scanlines in an image, that normally should not be visible. Since the launch of the new PSP 3000, only a handful of gamers have complained about the problem, suggesting that some people are more sensitive than others to the effect.

According to Playstation forums member Josoncps, the problem is very real:

"The effect really only comes into view with fast moving objects on screen. That's why some say they don't see it, because they don't know what to look at. R&C Size Matters can show what I am talking about by simple moving Ratchet left and right on the screen. When you do that, look at the tool in his hand when he runs. See the lines going through it? Those are not supposed to be there. Play any game with fast moving objects and you will see the above illustrated effect. This needs to be brought to Sony's attention as it is in every game and every video with fast moving objects, expecially dark colored objectson light colored backgrounds."

On the other hand, many users report not being able to see the problem at all, suggesting that this might just be a case of whining from uber-sensitive fanboys. Most press outlets who have gotten their hands on a PSP 3000 unit have praised the screen for its brightness and color fidelity. No gaming system is perfect, and if the complainers were to compare a PSP 3000 display with say, the one from a Nintendo DS, they might not have so much to complain about, after all. Can you see scanlines on your new PSP 3000? Let us know in the PSP World Forums.
