Javoedge-Umd-Case-120Although they are an integral part of the PSP experience, we really haven't seen that many cases dedicated to the UMD. JavoEdge has come out with a UMD case that you can buy in a pack of six or receive as part of a current bundle/promotion with the JavoSkin for PSP (PSPworld Rating: A). We thought we'd take a look.

The cases are available in three different colors — Frosty White, Blue, and Purple — and you receive two of each in the six pack. All color preferences aside, we didn’t have a problem identifying the UMD inside the colored ones, and that’s really all we were worried about. More troublesome, however, is the latch. Not only is it on the left side of the case as opposed to the right — which is a little unusual — but it is also terribly hard to get open, at least at first. We’re all for latches that are secure, but these literally hurt our fingers when we were trying to open the cases — not good.

As for protection, the cases really don’t offer much aside from keeping the UMD safe for scratches. The plastic material they are made from bends and gives too easily to really help protect the UMD from breakage — we could easily bend the case with our hands, although when the UMD is inside they are tougher to bend — about as tough as the UMD is itself.

Overall, they aren’t horrible cases, especially for their price ($4.99 for the six-pack). However, due to the latches being terribly hard to open, on the opposite side of where we expect them, and the fact that they really don’t offer much more than scratch protection, they really aren’t much better than average, either.

Pros: Inexpensive, does a good job of scratch protection.

Cons: Horrible latch, material not strong enough to keep UMD from bending and/or breaking.
